Aside: Do I refer to this as a “Substack” or a blog? I’m going to side with the individual writers and stick with “blog.” . . . Although, in linking to that article, I want to add that he comes down more harshly on Substack than I feel myself. I really like Substack and subscribe to more writers there than I could justify to an accountant, if I had one.
I totally get why so many writers set up shop there. Substack makes it dead simple to create a site, start writing, and get paid for it. And there is probably a network effect as well that makes it a compelling choice versus competing platforms.
I’m glad Substack exists, and I’m glad it has legit competitors. Overall these seem like healthier spaces on the internet than most other social media platforms.
